About the artist
Claudia Grutke
Claudia Grutke was born in Germany and migrated to New Zealand in 1996. Her relocation from Christchurch to Raglan in 2013 gave her the opportunity to explore her passion for painting. She is a self-taught intuitive painter who uses mixed media in her work.
In 2020, Claudia attended the Creative Visionary Program with Californian abstract painter Nicholas Wilton. As a result, her work has become more introspective, contemplative, and even more abstract. Claudia uses mixed media to investigate atmosphere, feelings, and memories.
Working on several pieces at a time, she feels like an explorer and loves building layers by painting and drawing, scraping back, and adding more. In the process, the artist discovers marks, new tools, and new fragments of herself.
A minimalist mindset is represented in the use of limited colour palettes. In an attempt to find the delicate balance of what works and what doesn’t, layers may get smudged and obliterated or covered with drippy paint. Eventually, her artworks evolve into simple compositions.
