About the Aritist
Peter Shearer
Peter has been working with clay for over 30 years and his experience is apparent in all of his work. His forms and glazes reflect the New Zealand environment, and his work is distinctive and highly desirable.
His crackled surfaces are superb and give the work an aged and weathered appearance. We adore Peter's work, with it's Kiwi ethos throughout, from the glorious perfection of his crackle glaze in the Tidal series, to the deep green richness of our native bush in the Greenstone range, and the life and movement in his new Coastal Grasses pieces. We feel privileged to carry an extensive selection of Peter's work which is beautiful, functional, and a pleasure to have.
He applies crackled slips, combing and fluting to the leather hard clay and after each piece is bisque fired he rubs iron oxide into the surface to highlight the texture. Porcelain clay is used for the celadon pieces and all others are all made from stoneware clay.
All works have been reduction fired to 1280 centigrade. The pottery vases, bowls, beakers, and other forms that Peter makes are beautifully functional, and a pleasure to have for everyday use.
