About the artist

Anna Gedson

Born and Raised in Opotiki, Descendant of Ngati Rua – Whakatohea.

Anna is a very well established Māori Artist based in Opotiki. Exhibiting her work in a number of design stores and galleries throughout the Aotearoa, after studying her craft in Wellington. Anna’s work has been included in many national and local exhibitions and as a finalist in both the Waikato Museum No. 8 Wire exhibition and the Molly Morpeth Canady 3D award exhibition.

She draws inspiration from her Māori heritage and is strongly influenced by the beautiful traditional Māori Arts, which she then weaves into works with a contemporary feel. Anna loves working with a combination of natural materials such as flax, feathers and metals, presenting each piece of artwork as a precious taonga or (treasure)

Through her weaving, Anna has honed her skills and developed an eye for detail, resulting in exquisite miniature kete that are both functional and decorative. Her innovative approach to weaving has allowed her to create works that showcase the beauty of the traditional art form while also pushing boundaries.

Weaving is an integral part of Maori culture, and Anna's use of traditional techniques pays homage to this heritage while also incorporating modern elements. Her works are not only beautiful but also meaningful, making them perfect as gifts or keepsakes.
