Cashmere Care Guide
July 29, 2019
Cashmere is the world’s most luxurious and expensive fibre. It has always been the choice of royalty and wealth. Due to the fine nature of the fibre, it is essential to take extra care with your knitwear to make sure it looks as luxurious as it did on your first wear. Our expert team shows you how to wash and care for your cashmere sweaters so you can enjoy them year after year.
How to wash cashmere sweaters
We recommend hand washing all of your cashmere sweaters. There are some simple steps to follow:
- Fill your basin with lukewarm water (no more than 40 degrees) and add a small number of mild detergents such as baby shampoo or dish soap and ensure it's fully dissolved in the water before you begin washing.
- Gently squeeze the garment while underwater to help it soak up more cleaning solution. Never use bleach because it can dissolve the wool.
- Turn your garments inside out and soak for five minutes to help loosen the dirt.
- Don't wring or twist the fabric, which can stretch out the delicate material, instead just gently squeeze the water through the fibre.
- A fabric softener can be used if you wish.
- When rinsing, use the same temperature water as you used to wash. Keep changing the water until no more detergent comes out.
- Place your garment flat on a towel and roll it up to remove any remaining water.
How to dry cashmere sweaters
- Don't wring or twist to remove excess water, instead lay the item out on a towel, gently roll up and lightly press. Unroll and reshape by hand.
- Leave it to dry laid flat. If you hang it, the weight of the water will stretch it out of shape.
- Keep it away from heat sources like radiators and sunlight, allowing it to air-dry naturally.
- Iron your knit on cool heat to avoid damage.
How to store cashmere sweaters
- Keep it somewhere dry and cool. This will prevent heat damage and preserve colour.
- Don’t hang your cashmere sweaters. A hanger will distort the shoulders, and the garment will lose its original shape.
- Instead, fold your cashmere and keep it in a drawer or on a shelf away from moisture.
- Use the breathable garment bag or storage box. To prevent wrinkles, you can wrap each piece of cashmere clothing in acid-free tissue paper.
How to prevent cashmere sweaters from pilling
- Give cashmere garments a "rest" in-between wears, this can help reduce pilling.
- Wash and press as per the care instruction, inside out to avoid friction with other fabrics.
- Brush down to remove unwanted debris.
- Wash with specific detergents designed for cashmere.
