Nejat Kavvas
Nejat Kavvas, is a contemporary sculptor based in Auckland, New Zealand. Working primarily in cast glass, stainless steel, and bronze, his practice spans representational and abstract sculpture, often inspired by New Zealand’s native flora and fauna. His glass works are noted for their vibrant colour, elegant form, and a luminous depth that captures the essence of place and idea. Originally from overseas, Kavvas arrived in New Zealand in the 1970s and made it his permanent home. Trained as a pharmacist, he also studied archaeology, classical studies, and art history. An artist since the age of twelve, he became a full-time sculptor after training in glass casting and carving techniques across the U.S., Europe, and New Zealand. He studied at the Florence Art Academy in 2018 and in marble carving in Pietrasanta, Italy, in 2023. In addition to his sculpture practice, Kavvas designs rugs and carpets through his textile company and has taught art in Europe and New Zealand. He has exhibited internationally, including at SOFA Chicago, Istanbul Contemporary, and Context Miami. Kavvas continues to create from his studio in Rosedale, Auckland.
